Following the horrific scenes yesterday in Woolwich, we condemn in the strongest possible terms, the murder of Drummer Lee Rigby of the 2nd Battalion the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. We believe that such acts are never justified, are utterly contemptible and hurt all of us. The brutal and tragic events defy belief, and we hope that those responsible for this attack are given the severest possible sentences upon conviction.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the friends and family of the dead soldier, who served to protect the UK’s interests.

We also welcome the comments made by the Prime Minister today when he said:

“This was not just an attack on Britain and on the British way of life; it was also a betrayal of Islam and of the Muslim communities who give so much to our country. There is nothing in Islam that justifies this truly dreadful act.”

At times like these, we are reminded that our country continues to face a real threat from those who would seek to divide us and create fear and disharmony within our community; they cannot be allowed to succeed. Our city has a long and proud tradition of trust, tolerance and understanding and we must once again stand together against anyone who seeks to divide us.

It is the strength and unity of all our communities that binds us together and continues to make Peterborough a peaceful city.

We call upon all communities to remain true to their core beliefs and to redouble their efforts to work for peace and harmony and to unequivocally condemn the dreadful events in Woolwich.
