1. DEATH CERTIFICATE

If the death takes place at home, then phone the GP, who in turn will either issue a Cause of Death Certificate or may refer the case to a Coroner.

If the death takes place in hospital, then the Resident Doctor will issue the Cause of Death Certificate or may refer the case to a Coroner.

If the case is referred to a Coroner, he will carry out all the necessary investigations and will then issue a Cause of Death Certificate or will carry out a post mortem and will then issue a Cause of Death Certificate. Please note, that if he decides to do a post mortem, then you have no chance of dissuading him. It is better if you request him to carry it out as soon as possible.

2. BURIAL CERTIFICATE

After obtaining the Cause of Death Certificate, a relative of the deceased should take it to the Register Office at 33 Thorpe Road, Peterborough, PE3 6AB (Tel: 01733 566323) and register the death.

The opening times of Peterborough Register Office are 9.30 am – 3.30 pm, Monday to Friday. However, outside these times, a Registrar can be contacted by telephoning the Peterborough City Council emergency number (01733 551386).

You should also take with you the deceased’s NHS card, latest passport and pension book (if applicable).

The Registrar will then issue a green coloured Burial Certificate. You must then take this to the hospital so that the Mayyit can be released. The Burial Certificate will be required by the Jamaat in order to obtain a burial plot. The Jamaat will also arrange to collect the Mayyit and bring it to the Husaini Islamic Centre for ghusl and kafan.
